Feedback from studens and volunteers in Bolivia

I am still in South America, but left Bolivia today and went to Peru. I've been very satisfied with my programme. It seems to me that EXIS does not charge noticeably more money compared to when you look for the school on your own. This is very positive. Information about the education programme from your part has been fantastic, I am very satisfied. The work was hard and physically demanding, but was a very learning experience and I am happy to have done it.

There is never enough time to do all the things that need doing. The orphanage is under-staffed and needs all the volunteer help it can get. As a nurse I was especially frustrated by a cruel nurse who keeps her job despite many reports on her bad behavior. A background in nursing, teaching or social work is a big advantage here.

It was the hardest job I’ve ever done, especially leaving the children. Seeing their development and their smiles was the greatest reward. The personal contact is always the most important.

Volunteers must realize that we are there for the children and not for ourselves. I worked closely with the Bolivian staff to find out what they really wanted and made a laminated translation of the orphanage routine for new volunteers. We make a difference.

El Kinder San Roque es un jardín de infantes de clase pobre a media que esta subvencionado por el Gobierno. Acoge de lunes a viernes de 9h a 12h a más de 100 niños de 4 a 5 años repartidos en 6 cursos: 3 de primera sección (niños mas chiquitos) y 3 de secunda sección (niños mas grandes). Cada niño lleva un mandil de los colores del Kinder, ósea rojo y blanco.
En los cursos hace mucho frío, los niños y las profesoras tienen que dejar sus abrigos, bufandas y a veces hasta los guantes.
En este jardín de Infantes se encuentran una directora, una ayudante, una portera, 6 maestras, una auxiliar y una profesora de música.
Los lunes, los niños empiezan la semana cantando todos juntos en el recreo antes de entrar a sus cursos respectivos. Cantan un himno a Bolivia, uno a la bandera boliviana, uno al Kinder y otro a Dios.
Las clases de dividen en 3 partes. De la llegada al primer recreo los niños juegan con rastis (legos), plastilina, carritos u otros juegos propuestos por la profesora. Una vez que todos los niños hayan llegado, reciben una merienda que se compone de una leche saborizada, gelatina, galletas o mandarina que toman antes de salir al recreo a jugar con todos los otros niños.
Después de la primera pausa las maestras proponen una actividad como pegar pedazos de papel en una hoja, dibujar, aprender a escribir letras o numerales, etc.
Después del segundo recreo, dos veces a la semana cada curso tiene su clase de música donde les enseñan canciones en las cuales tienen que utilizar todo su cuerpo (manos, pies, cabeza, etc) y obviamente su voz.
Las clases se terminan a las 12h pero algunos padres no llegan antes de las 12h30 entonces algunas profesoras tienen que quedarse hasta que todo hayan sido recogidos.
Los niños más grandes tienen pequeñas tareas semanales para practicar su escritura. Lo hacen en sus cuadernos respectivos.
Otro día desfilamos con los niños alrededor del kinder. Fue muy interesante y divertido.
De los puntos positivos que pude notar hay el hecho que los niños están contentos de venir al Kinder: les gusta jugar, compartir con sus compañeros, son vivos, adorables y muy afectuosos.
Las profesoras los quieren y preparan actividades pedagógicas (pintar, pegar, copiar, escribir, recitar cantinas, contar historias…).
Los cursos están bien decorados con póster, dibujos, alfabeto, cantinas… Tienen un parque con resbalin y balancela.
De otra parte destaque un punto negativo que me parece importante el cual se refiere a la higiene. En efecto vi que no hay jabón en los baños y peor aun, no hay papel higiénico en los baños ni se puede largar el agua. Eso tiene como consecuencia que entre ellos los niños se transmiten sus bacterias y enfermedades.
Tampoco se lavan las manos después de haber tomado su recreo: andan con las manos y la boca sucias y pegajosas.
En algunos cursos se tira todo en el suelo: deshechos de tajador, galletas hechas polvo…y no recogen antes del medio día, cuando se van los niños.
Si puedo ofrecer un consejo seria que a principios de año las profesoras se encarguen de enseñar a los niños a lavarse las manos (si posible con jabón) después de ir al baño y de haber comido para que se convierta en una costumbre para ellos.
Espero que estas pocas frases permitan conocer más el Kinder San Roque, sus actividades y necesidades.
A mi me gusto mucho ayudar y asistir en los diferentes cursos. Los niños son muy amigables y cariñosos, me fue útil ver como  se desarrollan clases para niños de esta edad, lo que están capaces o no de hacer, y aprender cantinas y canciones.
¡Fue una experiencia muy enriquecedora y pienso repetirla en cuanto pueda!

San Miguel is a very special place, and I loved it there, especially teaching the kids, which I did the last two weeks, unfortunately not before.This is what I’ve been doing these past two months:
I stayed with the family – helping the mother doing daily work
I went translating for the tourists
I helped in the kitchen in the lodge
I painted English/Spanish signs for the lodge. (1: Careful, slippery when wet. 2: please take off your shoes before entering)
I helped cleaning and checking the cabins (and checked the cleaning as well)
I helped checking the water filtration system
I worked a little bit in the office
I helped doing the volunteer manual with Krisz and Samuel (two other volunteers)
I painted and helped redecorating the office
I taught in the school for 2 weeks (one week with a volunteer called Fran, and another week with Renee)

In the school we taught the second and third grade (I tried in the first grade as well, but I think they are too young!)
List of what we’ve been teaching in the 2.grade: -Greetings, numbers from 0-20, days of the week, months, the family tree (all the family members),

In total I’ve been doing lots of different things. When I look back, I realize how lucky I actually am. It’s been great to help out all over, experience the culture, get to know the people, play with the kids etc. So I’m very grateful for my time in San Miguel. I’ve learned a lot, and I definitely want to return someday!!
